11/28/2006

In this episode, my good friend, Diane DeFilipi of "Let's Go Cook Italian" will tell us about the foods, wines and family traditions that make up a typical Italian Christmas and shares some of her favorite recipes. She and Nancy Hawks Miller, our Director of Education, are enjoying a glass of Prosecco, the sparkling wine of the Veneto, to get into the spirit of the season.

And now, especially for our listeners to celebrate the holidays, we're offering a 12% discount on our AmerItal -- a flavorful Tuscan-style Sangiovese and Cabernet blend -- and a 10% discount on all other wines. Just call us toll-free at (800) 276-9210 and mention code: PC30 (that's Papa, Charlie 30).

Free Viagra spices up life in small Brazilian town

BRASILIA, Brazil (Reuters) - The mayor of a small Brazilian town has begun handing out free Viagra, spicing up the sex lives of dozens of elderly men and their partners.

"Since we started the free distribution of sexual stimulants, our elderly population changed. They're much happier," said Joao de Souza Luz, the mayor of Novo Santo Antonio, a small town in the central state of Mato Grosso.

Souza Luz said 68 men over the age of 60 had already signed up for the program, which was approved by the town's legislature and has been dubbed "Happy Penis," or "Pinto Alegre" in Portuguese.

But the program has also had the unforeseen consequence of encouraging some extra-marital affairs, Souza Luz said.

"Some of the old men aren't seeking out their wives. They've got romances on the side," he said.

To discourage such illicit canoodling, Souza Luz said the city had decided to begin distributing the Viagra pills to the wives of the men who signed up for the program.

"That way, when the women are in the mood, they can give the pills to their husbands," he said.

96-year-old blazes a trail on the net

Francis Bartels has a story to tell. Of his experience as a black man in Hitler's Germany and of his memories of his pupil Kofi Annan, who would become the world's top diplomat. Bartels has written his memoirs but, at 96, knows time is not on his side to get it published, writes David Smith.

So the great-great-grandfather turned to a website which is quietly changing the face of the publishing industry. Lulu.com offers the chance to upload writing on the internet for sale on demand. The site is now selling 2,000 different titles a week and will produce about a million units this year, making it one of the world's biggest publishers. It costs budding authors nothing to put their book on Lulu, although they must format and edit it themselves. Money is paid only when anyone orders a copy. Some are printed only once, some never.

Article continues
Bartels, a former Unesco education adviser, said: 'I've written books before and I know it takes two years from submitting the manuscript to the time it's out.' In the Fifties Bartels was head of Mfantsipim School, Cape Coast, Ghana, and remembers Annan, now UN Secretary-General. 'He was a good student with a mind of his own,' he said. 'He was the Jesse Owens of the school, good on the playing field as well as in class.'

Bartels, who now lives in Paris, could not spice up his book with tales of Annan getting into trouble. 'I can't remember ever caning him. I reserved caning for anti-social behaviour only. Maybe I did. Only he will remember.' He is glad Annan's tenure at the UN is almost over. 'I'm relieved that he's leaving that burden, which he described to me as 'The job from hell".'

The Trip to Bountiful

Since we opened one year ago the most passionate feedback we have received about our restaurant has been from natives of India. We have been regaled with so many wonderful stories and comments about the food, the smells and especially Â- the flavors.

One of our most dedicated regulars is Oshmi Dutta, DDS. Dr. Dutta is native of India, a gourmet and an vocal food critic. Oshmi dines at Vindalho three or four times a month, sometimes more. Oshmi tells us that he returns so often because the food is evocative of the food he eats at home in India.

We have developed an affectionate relationship with Oshmi and he has gotten to know us. He respects and understands our reverence for the recipes, techniques, spices and the people of the Indian sub-continent.

Oshmi has made us the most generous of invitations and we have accepted. In February, chef de cuisine David Anderson will travel to India with Oshmi as his guide. Confirmed stops include Mumbai (Bombay), Goa and Kerala. Over the course of the nine-day trip. David will be exposed to a wide array of opportunities and experiences, sampling the nation's cuisine in people's homes, in fine restaurants and hotels and from street vendors. David will taste, watch and learn in each setting, absorbing all that India has to offer. Upon his return, he will translate his experiences from his journey to the Vindalho kitchen. We are grateful to Oshmi for this incredible opportunity.
